TOOTHPICK SCULPTOR
When I was little, I desperate wanted a doll's house. I couldn't afford one myself (I was living off of found quarters in the couch cushions that I then traded for chapstick at CVS) and I couldn't justify asking my parent to buy me one when I knew I would grow out of the faze in a few months. So I turned to my second obsession, arts & crafts, and made one myself. Out of popsicle sticks and Elmer's glue. By the time I was done with the project I was so sick of it that I get it away to my neighbor.
So it doesn't come at a surprise that when I came across the work of Scott Weaver I couldn't help but stop in awe. This man spent over 34 years building an entire kinetic sculpture of San Francisco using nothing but toothpicks and glue. He estimates over 100,000 toothpicks and 3,000 hours went into the project. While not a record-breaking accomplishment (Weaver himself admits that there are multiple larger toothpick sculptures that have been recorded), it is the first kinetic piece of it's kind, offering 4 distinct "city tours" of SanFran. Check out these beautiful images, and don't miss Weaver's video below!
